Curriculum
Our curriculum is taught as separate subjects and where ever possible we try to make tangible learning links. From the earliest years we believe that reading is key to effective learning and we use the Little Wandle Phonics scheme to give children the best start to their reading journey. We believe that it is important that the content of the curriculum is taught in a fun and contextual way so that it has meaning and relevance for every child. Our teachers work hard to ensure that all learners are able to access lessons at levels appropriate to their needs. We try to enhance children's learning by incorporating into all our planning educational visits and expert professional providers such as artists, musicians and authors so that our children have a wide breadth of experiences and memorable moments.
Right to Withdraw from Religious Education
As a Church of England school in the Diocese of Lichfield, Religious Education (RE) is a central part of our curriculum and reflects our Christian vision, values and ethos. Our RE curriculum is taught in line with diocesan guidance and enables pupils to explore Christianity in depth, while also learning about other world religions and non‑religious worldviews. This supports understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity.
Parental Right to Withdraw
Under the Education Act 1996, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child wholly or partly from Religious Education, should they wish to do so.
The school recognises and respects this statutory right. Parents are not required to give a reason for withdrawing their child from RE.
Our Approach
As a Church of England school, we strongly encourage parents and carers who are considering withdrawal to discuss their concerns with the Headteacher. In many cases, a clearer understanding of the aims, content and approach of the Religious Education curriculum—shaped by Lichfield Diocese guidance—can help to address questions or concerns.
Religious Education at our school is inclusive, educational and age‑appropriate. It is not intended to convert pupils but to help them understand religious beliefs, values and practices, and to encourage reflection, curiosity and respect for others.
Practical Arrangements
If a child is withdrawn from Religious Education:
- Appropriate alternative educational activities will be provided.
- The school is not required to provide alternative Religious Education.
- The right to withdraw from RE does not apply to collective worship, which is covered by separate legislation.
Requests for withdrawal should be made in writing to the Headteacher. Any arrangements will be discussed and agreed in consultation with parents or carers.
Further Information
If you would like further information about our Religious Education curriculum, diocesan guidance, or wish to discuss withdrawal, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with the Headteacher.
Right to Withdraw from Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
As a Church of England primary school, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is delivered in a way that reflects our Christian vision, values and commitment to nurturing healthy relationships, respect for self and others, and human dignity.
RSE supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and helps them to grow into confident, caring and responsible individuals.
Statutory Requirements
In primary schools:
- Relationships Education is statutory for all pupils and parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from this aspect of the curriculum.
- Sex Education, beyond the requirements of the science curriculum, is not statutory in primary schools.
Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from some or all of the sex education elements of RSE that sit outside the statutory science curriculum.
Our Approach
As a Church of England school, our RSE curriculum is rooted in our Christian values of love, respect, compassion and responsibility. Teaching is:
- Age‑appropriate and sensitive
- Inclusive and respectful
- Delivered in partnership with parents and carers
We carefully explain changes in growing up and human relationships in a factual, supportive and developmentally appropriate way.
Withdrawal from Sex Education
If parents wish to withdraw their child from sex education (outside of the statutory science curriculum), we strongly encourage them to discuss this with the Headteacher. This ensures:
- A clear understanding of what is taught
- An opportunity to address questions or concerns
- Agreement on appropriate arrangements for the child
Requests for withdrawal should be made in writing to the Headteacher. The school will respect such requests and ensure suitable alternative arrangements are in place during any sex education lessons.
Please note that:
- Withdrawal does not apply to Relationships Education
- Withdrawal does not apply to the science curriculum (e.g. life cycles)
Further Information
Parents and carers are welcome to view RSE materials and discuss the curriculum at any time. If you would like further information or wish to discuss withdrawal, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with the Headteacher.
We regularly review, adapt and modify our curriculum to make it continually relevant and meeting the needs of our children.
